Therapy Services

Dr. Teagno and Dr. Solomon founded The Relationship Institute in order to focus and leverage their ability to help couples and individuals gain the ability to achieve true intimacy to their Long-Term Love Relationships.

Both Steve and Lorie work with individuals, couples and groups in therapy and have each been doing so for over 20 years in La Jolla, California. We particularly focus on working with couples in crisis, couples who fear their relationship is broken beyond repair.

We specialize in helping those couples since their need and potential loss is so great and because we have found that a large percentage of them can not only heal their Long-Term Love Relationship (LTLR) but can rebuild it so that their love is stronger than ever and their LTLR is more fulfilling and healthy than it has ever been.

Not only that, what Lorie and Steve focus with all couples on is through their therapy work giving couples a working knowledge and hard-earned experience at wielding the tools of intimacy that they can take with them after couples therapy so they can nourish their LTLR over time, overcoming on their own the inevitable struggles that all LTLRs go through during the years ahead of them.

The work we do at TRI is based on the realization that LTLRs are comprised of many moving parts and most of us are not equipped to know what is realistic to expect in a relationship and how to repair or realign our relationship when it or we “get stuck” and continue to end up in the same old argument or stand off. Therapy with a well trained, experienced psychologist who has a real understanding of how LTLRs work, what nourishes them and what injures them, and who uses practical tools with couples that enable them to build and strengthen their relationship allows you to get unstuck and attain the loving and fulfillment you yearn for in your LTLR, the most important relationship in your life.

The Relationship Institute and Drs. Teagno and Solomon can help you to understand your “stuck spots” and show you the way to be the kind of partner you want to become as well as help create the kinds of relationships that make you and your partner better people.

Whether you and your partner are in a on-going crisis, experiencing a relationship setback due to immediate circumstances or are facing a relationship devastation, TRI therapy can provide you with hope, support and the tools to repair, rebuild, strengthen and add resiliency to your relationship.

Working with couples grappling with infidelity is a particular specialty of Drs. Solomon and Teagno. Their new book, "Intimacy After Infidelity" lays out their groundbreaking work with couples whose LTLR has been shattered by infidelity and their success in enabling them to heal and rebuild their love relationship.

Both Drs. Teagno and Solomon also work with clients struggling with depression, anxiety disorders and many other presenting problems.

The Relationship Institute offers couples therapy as well as group couples therapy and intensive weekend couples seminars.

Specific Therapy Orientations

Dr. Steven D. Solomon works in therapy with couples, individuals and families to help them achieve their goals and get past the causes of the pain in their lives.

He is a directive therapist who gives active feedback designed to help people get what they are looking for from therapy as quickly as possible. But he also focuses on long-term solutions instead of quick fixes that don’t address the underlying causal factors, factors that if unaddressed will create recurring problems for the individual or couple in the future.

Steve’s therapy is based on openness and honest feedback in a caring, respectful relationship. Establishing that respect and that caring is the backbone of his work, allowing him to push clients to confront their weaknesses, face their demons and also to harness and use their strengths.

He focuses a great deal on emotion and the clients’ emotional self-awareness (ESA). By building ESA in clients Steve empowers them to not only learn how to take good care of themselves but also to strengthen their relationship with themselves and feel more powerful in keeping their life on the path that is healthy and righteous for them.

Steve’s work with couples focuses on giving them the tools that enable them to build a Long-Term Love Relationship that will be happy and fulfilling for years and years. This approach is rooted in teaching them how to self-diagnose their LTLR and its problems and in how to use the Three Intimacies to fix and nurture their LTLR.

Dr. Lorie Teagno works with couples, families and individuals. When working with all clients she identifies and discusses both their strengths and relative weaknesses. She works with every client to teach then tools they can use to imporve their relationships and their lives.

Her therapy orientation is focused on the context in which one lives and the individuals's goals that contribute to them thriving. She also helps clients identify what behaviors and beliefs thwart their progress, and assists clients in achieving the realistic goals they identify for their improved happiness. In this effort she encourages her clients to face their fears and struggles and try new behaviors.

Dr. Teagno emphasizes that mistakes are our best learning experiences as long as we are willing to admit them, learn from them and take credit for our accomplishments.

Her therapy work includes the significant concepts of personal integrity, emotional maturity and the importance of feeling that we have lived our lives well for ourselves and contributed to the lives of others.
